Week 6 Discussion Question Article Analysis (Snow White)
The article is strong and valid argumentative, where Abate states that Snow White has endured not because of boys and girls retelling and republishing it but because of the adults. Indeed, children rarely, if ever, publish fairy tales like in the case of Snow White (p.183). Abate reveals that of the two thousand seven hundred different editions of the Snow White story listed in World Cat, none have been done by Juvenile authors (p.183). Adults indeed tell all these stories, and it is true.
The article is weaker in its claim that fairy tales have had an increase in violent scenes instead of a reduction like it was done in the case of sexual and indecent scenes. Many fairy tales today lack violent scenes, as is the case of movies and series (p.182). Some filters have been implemented to protect children from possibly horrendous scenes. Even Abate cannot fully verify her claims as she only gives two examples of the doves that pecked out eyes from Cinderella’s stepsisters and the moment when Rumpelstiltskin tears himself into two halves.
