Employees’ attitudes
Firstly, discuss some of the attitudes most valued by employers, as discussed in the e-text.
Employees’ attitudes play a significant role in the profitability and success of any organization. For that reason, attitudes influence the hiring and promotion of workers. One attitude valued by employers is the self-motivation to be accountable for the job. No employees need an inflexible, stubborn, and arrogant employee; instead, they value workers who are open to change. An employee with the team spirit facilitates decision making and problem-solving in the organization. Other necessary attitudes that employers value include honesty, health consciousness, basic interpersonal skills, and co-worker diversity appreciation.
Discuss how you can counteract that negative thinking by using positive thinking that would keep your attitude more in line with what employers are looking for in their employees.
At one time, we had planned to meet with my newly found friend at a restaurant for coffee. She was thirty minutes late, and I started lamenting that I must have said something wrong over the phone that did not please her, and that’s why she decided to stand me up. After she arrived, only for her to apologize and tell me she was stuck in traffic. The next time I am meeting someone, and they get late, I will give them the benefit of the doubt, which will save me from unnecessary worries. By giving people the benefit of doubt, then I will have improved my basic interpersonal skills.
Lastly, watch the Sam Berns Ted Talk (Week 6: Required Resources) and discuss how he incorporated optimism in his life and had a positive attitude despite his challenges. How could you apply optimism to your life?
Sam’s philosophy of living a positive life despite his challenges is divided into three tenants. Firstly, be content with what you can’t do because there is a lot that you can do. Secondly, always be in the company of people you want to be around. Lastly, live with a forward-thinking mind and still have something you are looking forward to. The TED by Sam has made me feel empowered to start afresh. Even though I have not lived in gratitude and joy, I can start afresh from anywhere at any moment. If I trip, I can always start over again until a time comes when I can walk tall, just like Sam.
