The Middle East has been one of the conflict-prone areas in the world. The scramble for natural resources has affected the everyday lives of individual living in this region. in this essay; we will discuss two significant resources that the area scrambles for are water and oil reserves.
Geographically the Middle East regions are primarily covered by desert. As a result, the areas have suffered from a severe crisis for lack of enough fresh water that is safe for consumption. The Middle East is a land torn by severe water challenges. From Iran to Afghanistan, competitions for this scare resource has led to violence and volatility in the region (Chellaney 219). The situation has led to drastic measures in combating the menace. Desalination centres have been set up across the region to help process salty water from the oceans to cub the existing variance of freshwater. One of the environmental challenges that this process encounters is the disposal mechanism used to eliminate waste salt. Desalination companies pump the salt back to the ocean; this process destroys the marine ocean environments.
Among the conflicts in the Middle East, lacks of freshwater is a cause of some conflicts encountered in the area. The price of these commodities has also escalated, causing monetary concern on many citizens. For posterity, there is a need for the governments of the Middle East to expand and lookout for new ways that can help them mitigate the problem.
Oil is an essential national resource in the Middle East region. When oil prices go down, it has negatives effects on the general operations in the area. However, the control of oil has enabled the region to preserve power and security. The dominance of non-renewable resources leads to power dynamics in the region. Oil has also led to border conflicts between neighbouring countries. The situation has led to some countries encroaching territories grounds of other countries forcefully. Saddam Hussein leadership Iraq invaded Iran then extended to Kuwait (Colgan 5). As a result of this fierce war has been experienced in these regions.
