Smart Home Appliances
Apple’s HomePod is designed to change how music is heard in our homes. According to Apple, it does something that no other company has done. It is a smart speaker with incredible sound and integrates Apple music featuring a built-in Siri support system. With a six-microphone array, the speaker detects Siri’s command from any part of the room even in the presence of loud music. Siri gets activated by a “Hey Siri” command, and there is an LED waveform that lets you know when the personal assistant is listening (Sharda, Delen, and Turban, 2019).
The HomePod works as a hub for Apple’s home kit platform enabled smart home devices. Speaking to Siri through the HomePod controls home kit-enabled devices in your house (Costello, 2020). HomePod also provides remote access to smart devices invaluable when one is not at home. One can also have a scene that executes an order. For instance, one could set “Hey Siri, good night” to switch off all the house lights.
Alexa is Amazon’s virtual assistant that receives words and turns them into actions. Basically, Alexa is to Amazon as Siri is to Apple (Rawes and Wetzel, 2020). Alexa is a voice that one can ask and get an answer from. The virtual assistant is now integrated into smart home devices such as thermostats and microwaves. Alexa also integrates with various other devices such as smoke detectors, dishwashers, coffee makers, dryers, air conditioners, fridges, and ovens. According to Christine Edwards, most appliance manufacturing companies will now provide extensive line ups of smart appliances as part of the ever-expanding “internet of things.”
