Scoring and appraisal

Gordon Lightfoot

Early Morning Rain

This particular song is basically outlining the major contributions of Gordon Lightfoot in the music industry in Canada. He is well known and appreciated to have played a key part in defining the folk-pop music of the 1960s towards the 1970s.  Lightfoot is recognized as one of the most talented musicians in the world.

For Lovin’ Me

To an extreme extent, this song elucidates the unconcern of the songwriter towards his fiancé and her love affair. He says that he does not care whether she leaves him because he claims that he has a hundred more girls like her fiancé. He is even assuring her that even if she gets away, he will not think of her anymore because she thought he was not the kind of love she thought he would be.

Canadian Railroad Trilogy

In this song, the writer narrates how life in their land was before suddenly being taken away to work in the scorching sun by the white men constructing a railroad. He orates how life was difficult, with sometimes having one meal a day with bad whiskey. However, he finally narrates how they finally made it in life after they had completed the work. They ate, drank, and slept comfortably as before.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

The writer narrates the fateful night that befell the crew in the midst of the sea. He illustrates how the boat broke into two and sadly sunk in the sea. He also talks about the uncertainty of the waves pattern being unclear. However, he brings to the reader’s attention that the boat was small; that is why it was easily tossed and sunk.

Sundown

Sundown is a song composed by Gordon Lightfoot, which mainly talks about the immorality of a certain man who is unstoppably running after a woman. There a warning posed to “Sundown” to keep off the woman’s back because sometimes she feels like she is sinning when she sees that happening.

Carefree Highway

The song is all aimed at pointing to the fact that this life does not need any hurry. In fact, doing the right things, however much it takes a long time, is the best approach to handling this life. The writer points out that it is good to take life simply not to get carried away by stress and anxiety.

My favorite song on this list is “For Lovin’ Me.” I love this song because it is one of a kind that helps to present a clear picture of what happens in the outside world between people who have fallen in love with one another. It paints a picture of how men having other ladies in mind tend to react when their present love is proving to be cooperative with them in the same line of thought. My major impression in this song is how the writer presents the man saying that even if he walks away, he will still not remember her in mind because apart from her, there are a hundred more ladies to her. The song’s musical strength and its lyrics are just absolutely awesome! Each line presents a clear aspect of love and the dangers of failing to honor one’s love when they are together.

Leonard Cohen

Suzanne

Leonard Cohen writes this song to express his feelings about the relationship between Suzanne and him. But he fears marrying her because she is a wife to another man who is his friend. However, Cohen still does not want to let it go because he feels that Suzanne is a strong woman that can shield her as her own child!

So Long, Marianne

The writer recalls the good memories he had with Marianne; how they met when they were young. But again, he also orates the dark times they went through to establish their relationship. He also points out that somehow along the way, Marianne’s love might have been hidden; therefore, he demands to unveil it.

Bird on the Wire

Cohen tries to paint a picture of fighting for mental freedom from a love he is so much attached to. The man cannot have the woman at his bosom, but can only imagine her in his thoughts. Therefore, he tries as much as possible to release himself from the stress of not seeing his love, but rather be with her and have a good time with her.

Famous Blue Raincoat

The poems talk about a fight between two men arguing with a woman, who is claimed to be a girlfriend to each man. One of them claims that the other man degraded his love for putting on a coat that is torn on the shoulder. There is a claim that the woman came back with a very different countenance.

First We Take Manhattan

In a general view, this particular song is about a man who realizes that his actual ability and talent is in music. He also concludes that he cannot just detach from his destiny in music, even though he is detained for twenty years to change his calling. The monkey and plywood violin also symbolizes his great love for music.

Ain’t No Cure for Love

Cohen vividly articulates the other perspective of falling sick in love with someone. And again, he explains that the pain resulting from love can never be cured. There is also clear evidence from the Bible that there is no cure for a lost love, or even love that has not been discovered yet.

My favorite song is “Ain’t No Cure for Love.” My greatest impression in this song is that since one does not take care of the love he or she has with the partner, it is impossible to repair that relationship and restore the love. Another aspect that has caught my attention is that even religion has a place in handling this matter. Evidence is drawn from the Holy Books about lost love being impossible to be cured. Even doctors can never find a cure for lost love. Therefore, one must be very careful in their relationship and love to guard and maintain it, lest they come to regret in life for the lost love.

Each line in the lyrics plays a significant role in explaining the importance of something that one has now, including the moments they spend together. This defines the basis of their intimacy. Things only become difficult and chaotic when the strings are detached, when none of them is in good terms with the other.
