Locale in Westchester County
Westchester’s locale is among the safest places to be. Its main watersheds are Croton River, Pocantico and Sawmill River, Peekskill, and Haverstraw bay. Water travels both over the land surface and through the ground. During this process, water dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive materials.
Mainly, Westchester locale receives its drinking water from lakes, streams, millponds, reservoirs, wells, and springs. This is inclusive of both bottled and tap water. The locale’s water supply is also received from the uptake Catskill and Delaware watersheds of the water system in New York City (Westchester Joint Water Works). Apparently, Westchester’s locale city system has two connections from where water is collected from. These include Rye Lake, the eastern portion of Kensico Reservoir, in Harrison, and the Shaft 22 of the Delaware Aqueduct in Yonkers.
In most cases, Westchester’s watershed has been affected and still could be affected by the presence of animals and the ongoing human activities such as the use of pesticides and herbicides, the use of radioactive contaminants, microbial contaminants, and organic contaminants. Also, Urban development, installation of drainpipe systems, and other modifications into Westchester’s water pathways and watershed have produced roughly 5,000 acres of drainage area tributary to Westchester locale. Concerning natural occurrences that may affect the water flow in Westchester locale, it is well known that Westchester is among the Greenwich areas. The climate of Greenwich is humid all through. As such, Westchester is always blessed with abundant rainfall because the more it rains, the more relative humidity increases, and as such, evaporation takes place, resulting in more rain and higher levels of water in lakes. To conclude, despite the presence of animals, and impacts of human activities, Westchester locale, through its state authority, has put in place various policies aimed at protecting the locale’s natural resources, especially its drainage system because of the role it plays.
