Gaming based learning for ELLs
Gaming based learning refers to the inclusion of games in teaching instructions. The main aim of the incorporation of these learning strategies is to grab learners’ attention and engage them effectively in the learning process. Unlike other instruction methods that were solely based on rote learning, gaming-based learning does not emphasize on memorization. The new form of instruction has the potential of making learners retain information unlike before. Game-based learning is a bit more practical as students can understand how skills and knowledge gained can be applied in a real-life situation, particularly in problem-solving. According to studies, effective learning is where students are actively engaged in the process of learning. In this instruction model, games are integrated with the content, in that as the learns gains, the fun can learn. Gaming can be incorporated in games in three ways. First, learners design and create their games; the developer or instructor designs the games; and there is the integration of commercial fabricated games in learning activities.
Challenges of implementing gaming in the classroom
However, the integration of gaming based learning in school curriculum might come with several challenges. For instance, the method may not be applicable where there are giant groups learners. The students may have different capabilities, personalities, and varying learning performances. All these differences may adversely affect the learning process. For example, if a learner has no interest in certain games, it means he or she is likely to gain little from the activity. Another challenge lies in the issue of learners with high expectations of everything digital. The learners with a variety of activities, humour, and reward surprises would end staying up their interests in learning.
