Acculturation Experience
Taking a nursing course guarantees an individual an opportunity to learn a new way of living and approach different life features. One adopts a nursing culture found on professionalism and caregiving to all. It is a process developing throughout the training period as one learns nursing theories, practices, and caregiving strategies. By graduating, a nursing student interprets the cultural surrounding from a professional overview and focuses on making things better by applying evidence-based strategies. On the other hand, a new nursing colleague who joined the nursing team is learning the nursing culture. During the learning process, the student undergoes cultural modifications through borrowing traits from the nursing culture. The young member may have different perceptions of how to handle different things in a new career. Nevertheless, with a passion for nursing, the new nursing colleague learns through asking questions and copying cultural procedures from colleagues.
My acculturation experience as a new graduate to nursing is different from that of a new nursing colleague who joined the team within the first year. The nursing college equipped me with social, cultural, and psychological changes enabling me to adapt to the nursing culture and apply the knowledge in society. Contrarily, the new nursing colleague handles things differently as he is adjusting to the new cultural environment and struggling to balance between two cultures before the nursing culture prevails. Nursing is a tradition that involves practicing specific caregiving procedures to patients, families, and society. A new nursing colleague works hard to adopt the new tradition before perfecting and accepting it as his or her own. It involves making a change in dressing, language, respect, norms, attitude, and behavior. My cultural acculturation experience is different from a new colleague in the nursing culture since I have learned and adopted the new nursing culture while the new is still learning.
