Negative influence on self-understanding
The social media platforms have falsely affected the day to day activities such as influencing on physical change among the youth .some of the children have affected their perception of their physical appearance. The physical appearance involves taking of the right picture, use of the right filter, wearing of the proper outfit and this is too much pressure for the youths, and this leads to them changing their physical appearance for the digital appearance for example in Instagram. It leads to smiling depression where the children suffer inwards adult’s fakes their smiles outwards. For instance, in America, the youths suffer significantly from this type of depression, and this can lead to disability according to (Liao, Zhou, and Liu & Wang 2020) which is a major depression because it positively affects the mental well-being. Social media highly influence the self-perception since one’s esteem is also affected and similarly affects eating habits hence having disordered eating.
Solitary lifestyle
The solitary life involves one becomes a loner in life due to social media influence. The youth uses social media as a replacement for face to face interactions with families, having time with peers and friends. The child undergoes depression since they are no able to share their problems the students are easily distracted in class since they mostly use smartphones, and this leads to even failure of attending to the classroom work. They get delighted since most of the time they are pressured on following their post, the loss in classroom work and lack of concentration and attention on social media platforms leads to anxiety hence depression among the youths.
Cyberbullying
Cyber bullying also is known as online harassment is increasingly becoming common among teenagers due to the use of social media platforms. The cyber bullying intentions are to harm and harassing each other’s (Pricilla Anandhi & Sheeba, 2019) through certain things such as: posting rumours about each other, remarks which are sexually related, posting somebody’s personal information and also hate speech. The cyber bullying leads to low self-esteem, suicidal actions and even frustrations and mainly depression to the victims. The victims become humiliated, worthless, vengeful and also disinterested for example, they get disinterested from schools leading to absenteeism and hence cropping of depression.
Display of fake people
The social media platforms display celebrities who make great influencers on teenagers. The teenagers are attracted to their lifestyles, behaviours on their social media platforms. For example, YouTube the teens are influenced by the musicians’ character. When they fail to meet their expectations, it leads to depression (Radovic, Gmelin, & Miller 2017). .The youth do not understand that most of the work done online by celebrities is as a job. Hence, they should not emulate everything online.
Engagement in risky cases
The social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, the youths are easily influenced by the posts online, and this leads to them engaging in suspicious and risky characters Such as watching pornographic materials and Engagement of social media platforms. It has led to erosion of the youth’s nature, traditions, history and their cultures. It happens because social, media platforms positively influence the children. The kids have dropped out of school due to online business which is the betting sites. They also can post embarrassing materials and again harassing each other. These lead to depression of the affected victims.
Lack of enough sleep
The youth has made social media sites to be their primary need. Most fellows are having smartphones their life is centrally dependant on social media platforms. For instance, the girls love posting a picture on Instagram and most of their time they spend on following their post, the likes and comments. It has now become a part of their life, and most lack sleep which leads to health disorders hence leading to depression.
In conclusion, social media has got the advantage of connecting people; people also become updated on on-going activities. Still, with everything it has to have demerits which cause depression and suicidal actions among the youths. The social media platforms such as Facebook leads to depression through cyber bullying, lack of enough sleep, most children prefer the solitary lifestyle and the faked lifestyle of the celebrities which the youths want to copy. The self-perception is also affected by social media; these ways leads to anxiety, low self-esteem, suicidal cases and even depression.
