In the book ‘Wishtree’ by Katherine Applegate, Samar’s character brings out the theme of racism. She is a Muslim, and her family is mistreated and segregated by other members of the community. Samar is intelligent, friendly, and quiet. Samar is intelligent. “Please,” Samar begged, “you can see how much people love the Wishtree. Please don’t cut it down.” (pg.47). She was just ten years old and understood how vital Red was to the community. Samar is friendly. “Her silence was so complete, her gentleness so apparent, that the residents would crawl from their nests of thistledown and dandelion fluff to join her. They seemed to accept her as one of their own.” (pg.8) Animals of different species came made friends with Samar and would not fear coming out and spending time with her Samar is a quiet person. “Someone who wants the world to quiet itself.” (pg.7). She liked enjoying peaceful moments. She would go out at night and sit by Red quietly. She seemed to enjoy the peace, calmness, and quietness. Amidst all the quarreling and harsh treatment by other people in the community, Samir presented herself as a peaceful, friendly, quiet, and intelligent person. As a result, her character inspires change among the people and helps prevent Red from being cut down.
