Zombie Economics
Zombie Economics
The primary purpose of this article is to portray how there existed economic inequality among Americans. The Native Americans feel that the immigrants are too many and have come to take the available economic opportunities from them. The Americans thus feel insecure as they fear they may end up depending on the immigrants for their survival. The author describes how the Americans fear the foreigners who have taken up their jobs and homes, and thus they fear they may end up losing their livelihood to the immigrants (Quiggin, 2012).
According to this article, the zombie metaphor is used to relate to economics. Zombies can be described as mindless monsters, but they still have to work as they have no control over what they are doing. The monsters are just there to follow orders from their masters and execute them. The zombies can thus be compared to an American who lost his/her job to the immigrants, and they are now trying to seek how they can make ends meet. The Americans are forced to do anything to earn a living in an economy that is collapsing. The Americans are powerless as they have lost their jobs and homes to foreigners, and thus they have to be controlled just like the zombies.
Zombies are a famous metaphor because in most cases, they are used to represent a powerless monster which in most cases, is portrayed as not being smart and also a cunning monster. Zombies also act just like the walking dead as the author states in the article. The zombies are seen acting depending on the orders from their masters and them in most cases, cannot be described as being independent in their thinking or making decisions. According to this article, the zombies are used to represent the youths and Americans who lost their jobs, homes and are very powerless and thus can be twisted in any manner by the immigrants. The zombie metaphor has thus been popularized to represent the situation where Americans and their economy are showing that they are in a similar situation.
The solution offered by the author in the last paragraph is purely achievable. The author sites the solution as to start by the discarding of the American imperialism that has brought their economy down and making America have an environment which is unfavourable for the native citizens. The author also proposes that economic opportunities should be made available to everyone and thus giving a boost to the poor economy. Infrastructure should also be improved to create more opportunities for youths. The youths should also be educated to make them feel more knowledgeable and thus discard the fear in them. The government should also consider the development of energy systems where the natives and the youths will be empowered to make the realization of the solution achievable. The author says the walking dead should get up and care for the living.
According to the article, there is too much economic inequality in America. The foreigners are seen to be benefiting more as compared to the native. The natives are losing their jobs to immigrants, the natives are getting little education, and there is the undeveloped infrastructure for the natives. Thus American imperialism has played the largest part in the development of the gap between the natives and the foreigners.
