Rhetorical Analysis Essay
In Joseph Adelman’s article, the question to be answered is who tells one’s story. The author informs the readers about how one story can be different when it is told from different perspectives by different people (Adelman 227).
Benjamin Carp’s article answers the question of the importance of music in storing information. Music can store histories of nations and people, encourage imaginations about things people cannot see, and help people interpret different stored sources of information.
Joseph Adelman intends to challenge the audience on whom they allow to share their stories. Adelman further prepares the audience to beware that different people can tell the same story in different versions. Others can be positive, while others can be negative about the same story regardless of its main theme and purpose (Adelman 280). Readers should, therefore, only allow people who shall keep the original intent of a story to tell it to the intended audience; otherwise, some bias can distort the information.
Benjamin Carp, on the other hand, wants the readers to understand and value music. Benjamin wants the readers to understand that they can learn their history from music. Benjamin also wants the audience to beware that different music serves different purposes. While some music is intended to praise some leaders and encourage their leadership styles, some music challenges poor leadership structures and leadership styles (Carp 291). Some music also intends to expose the evils in the society and challenge people to change from their wicked ways of doing things.
Both Joseph Adelman and Benjamin Carp’s audience are music lovers and people interested in understanding American history. Students of history, archeologists, historians, and patriotic citizens are the audience of the two writers.
Joseph Adelman is an associate professor of history at Framingham State university’s history department in Massachusetts. He is also an expert in media, communication, history, and politics. Adelman is currently an assistant editor for the Digital Initiatives at Omohundro Institute of the Early American History and Culture. Joseph also writes for the Junto besides being an assistant producer for the Ben Franklin’s World Podcast.
Adelman has a bachelor’s degree in history from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in history from Johns Hopkins University. Adelman has further been a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow of the American Antiquarian Society. He has also been a postdoctoral fellow in the Early American Economy and Society program at Philadelphia. Adelman has been a lecturer of history at John Hopkin’s university Hiroty department. Joseph is a credible writer because he uses peer-reviewed articles to inform his papers. He also writes articles on his area of expertise and thus making the information reliable. Joseph Adelman views American society as one characterized by various forms of discrimination.
Benjamin L. Carp is a history Professor for History at the Brooklyn College. Benjamin L. Carp is also the author of Defiance of the Patriots and The Boston Tea Party and the Making of America 2010. He is a credible author as he has experience in the field he writes on. Benjamin has written several articles on subjects such as nationalism, Quaker merchants, and firefighters. He has also written several articles for Colonial Williamsburg, the Washington Post, and the wall street journal. He has previously taught history at the University of Edinburgh and Tufts University. He has received the Leverhulme research fellowship award, the Charlotte Newcombe doctoral dissertation fellowship award, and the Andrew Mellon Fellowship in Humanities Studies award. His wards are, therefore, a confirmation of his credibility as an author. He also uses other peer-reviewed journals and articles in driving his arguments. Joseph Adelman talks about social class, economic factors that determine one’s social class, and how political factors can contribute to social exclusion. Joseph also talks about how people’s social classes can make them victims of political and economic discrimination.
Benjamin Carp also talks about social freedom and specifically antislavery and its importance to the slaves. The author also discusses the importance of political reforms with the American revolution (Carp 289).
Joseph Adelman and Benjamin Carp’s arguments are timely, considering that they both argue on the importance of music in driving transformation and creating awareness. Currently, there are so many music genres, and more people are making music as a profession. Their arguments inform this growing profession.
The authors make claims of value. While Adelman Joseph discusses the value of people’s perspectives, Benjamin Carp discusses music’s value in relaying the necessary information.
Adelman joseph uses various sets of subcultures like hip-hop to show how perspectives can differ. Benjamin Carp refers to American musicals in passing information.
Benjamin argues that music is not the only way to pass relevant information to the target audience. In contrast, Adelman argues that art gives artists a platform to share information that should otherwise not be shared (Carp 293).
Readers can argue that music only tells the audience what the musicians want them to know and can only speak to a specific audience.
Both articles argue that music is important in giving information. American history from the American revolution is mentioned as a component revealed by music in Hamilton. Both texts emphasize the role of music as an art in passing information.
I agree with both authors that indeed, music is a powerful tool for relaying information. However, music can be used to inform and can be used to ridicule and discourage unwanted behavior in society. It is also true that historians can not determine what type of information musicians pass across, although they can influence these musicians to conceal or relay certain information. From the texts, I understand that music can be an archive for storing occurrences and information that generations of the future can use for their knowledge and awareness.
