Perpetrators of crime cause damage to the well-being of their victims. The responsible persons that a victim can trust are the police. They deliver services in anticipation that the crime victims get better while in the justice system’s hands. The police can better serve these victims by listening to their grievances. The police should approach crime victims with humility. The vulnerability of crime victims requires care during interrogation. These police actions may increase trust in the law enforcement unit, which improves the relationship between crime victims and the police.
Also, the police should investigate complaints and solve problems. Police have skills that put them on the front line to gather intelligence. When crime victims report to them, they must follow up on every detail and capture crime investigation evidence. The victims feel motivated when police follow up on the cases. It motivates crime victims to continue pressing up for justice. In an example by Karmen (2012), a woman aged 43 years issued thanks to the police for keeping up with the case where her mother was sexually assaulted and strangled. Due to followup and contacting the police, the DNA of an ex-convict matched up with the one on the woman’s cloth, and finally, justice got served(p.198). This kind of service needs to be exhibited in the police service.
The police should help recover stolen property. The experience of crime victims involved in the burglary or any stolen item deals becomes better when police work on finding the missing items. This service assures the public that the police unit cares for the well-being of citizens. Karmen (2012) gives an excellent example of a young man who advertised a vehicle in a dealership site. The prospective client placed a bid, and the request for a driving test was permitted (p.201). The client took off with the vehicle and never returned. The victim staged a trap, and the same client fell for it. When he arrived at the meeting place, he was intercepted by the police who recovered the stolen vehicle and got charged for theft. The police should serve a crucial role in enhancing the best experience for crime victims.
