Character Evolution

In the beauty and the beast film, the rise and the fall of the kingdom can be accorded to the prince. The film revolves around a girl who finds herself in an abandoned castle attempting to look for her father who had disappeared when on a trip. A girl, Belle, finds that the abandoned castle was cursed and that a beast resided in it. She is held captive as her father is released on her will (Boyle). The journey to changing the lives of the beast and its character began with her captivity. The only way to break a curse is by loving somebody without selfish intentions before the final petal of a rose flower dropped. In a night of celebration, the prince of the kingdom is cursed into a beast by a witch, and his servants made antiques with human abilities, when Belle comes into his life, he gradually starts to change from being a mean beast to a beast with emotions and love.

When Belle, a beautiful girl, goes to look for her father, she finds him in the custody of the beast in an abandoned castle. Belle can free her father while she is left and held captive by the beast. A night in the cursed castle Belle tries to escape the cruel beast. In the woods, she is attacked by greedy wolves. The beast, however, appears to rescue her from the wolves. This is a show of compassion by the beast. The beast who was or is the prince was known for his cruelty and lack of compassion. He gradually starts to have a compassionate and loving heart towards Belle. The beast in the attempt to rescue Belle gets hurt and so Belle does not go home. She instead takes care of the beast’s wounds. The servants who are in the form of antiques are happy and hope that the curse will be finally broken. It was a gradual process of the beast to start being selfless.

When the beast saves Belle from a pack of wolves, his dressing style changes into more disciplined and formal attire. This is in an attempt to win Belle’s heart although unconsciously (Cooper-Cunningham). This portrays the gradual change from that unkind, spoiled and selfish prince. The beast is even able to ask Belle to dance with him later in the film after he is pursued by his servants to the chance. The beast is very stubborn, but Belle’s presence changes the way that it behaves and slowly starts to be loving and understanding. He even gives Belle the castle library and learns manners and kindness from her.

Belle learns that her father is in trouble and has to go home. The beast does not restrain or prevent her from going. Instead, he lets her go although he is left very miserable. When the villagers come to kill the beast, he has no intention of hurting any of them. Gaston who is a village mean and a person who lacks understanding is set to kill the beast. Upon seeing the Belle, the beast can escape from Gaston (Devos et al.). After an attempt on his life by Gaston, the final bud of the rose falls, and Belle is left in tears. However, the curse is broken, and the prince returns to his normal form together with other servants.

The beast learns of good manners and kindness from Belle. In the film, the beast evolves from being hot-tempered and commanding into a listener and having patience. The soft side is eventually revealed due to his associating with Belle although he is embarrassed and frightened to show this side of him. The story is a good illustration of how people can change to be better surrounded with the right attitude. The curse is finally broken, and the prince and the servants assume a normal life.
