Paul: Good afternoon, and welcome to “Direct Line.” It’s an overcast day in the nation’s Capitol. Joining me today will be Yvette Cantu, a former lesbian activist who now serves as policy analyst for the Family Research Council. But first, let’s take a look at some of today’s top stories.

[00:02:00]

President Clinton paid a somber attribute today to the 12 Americans killed in the US embassy bombings in Africa. Meanwhile, investigators say they’re making progress in a response of finding those responsible for the crimes. Bruce Blosil joins us now from the “America’s Voice” newsroom with the latest, Bruce.

Bruce: Paul, the fallen Americans, victims of the worst terrorist attack in history on a US embassy, were honored at Andrews Air Force Base only moments after the plane carrying their bodies arrived from Germany. Families of the victims, members of Congress, and a large diplomatic contingent were in attendance.

Madeleine: This has been a mission of pride and sorrow. I am honored to bring them home to America. It is beyond our power to turn the clock back to before last Friday. We cannot alter the past. We cannot bring back the ones we love.

Bruce: Though the main theme of the memorial service was to remember the sacrifice of those who died, President Clinton also used the occasion to warn the perpetrators of terror.

President Clinton: No matter what it takes, we must find those responsible for these evil acts, and see that justice is done. There may be more hard road ahead, for terrorist target America because we act and stand for peace and democracy because the spirit of our country is the very spirit of freedom. It is the burden of our history, and the bright hope of the world’s future.

Bruce: Meanwhile, investigators claim progress is being made. The FBI believes they have identified pieces of the vehicle used to carry the bomb in Kenya, but warn the process of searching for clues will take time.

[00:04:00]

Sheila: Formal search efforts have concluded at the blast site, and joint forensic teams have begun the exhaustive task of searching the building, and literally sifting through piles of rubble for evidence of the explosion. These teams have collected evidence of the blast both at the site and from several blocks away.

Bruce: The Kenyan government is holding five people for what they’re calling suspicious activities, but US investigators are still unwilling to point fingers in any direction, Paul.

Paul: Thanks Bruce for that report. Swiss officials are expressing relief and weariness over a $1.25 billion deal, to settle Holocaust-era claims. The country’s two biggest banks reached the accord after two days of talks, with lawyers representing the Holocaust victims and the World Jewish Congress. The bank say they assumed other Swiss institutions would help finance the payment to avert a US threat over Swiss bank accounts, bank boycotts. One bank which has been criticized for its wartime purchases of looted gold from Nazi Germany, was non-committal about contributing to the settlement, although it would offer protection from lawsuits. Other industry groups have taken a similarly cautious line, saying they needed time to review the deal before deciding how to respond. Swiss officials say the accord removes US pressure on the country.

They also say that Switzerland has to take a hard look at its past, especially its anti-Jewish wartime refugee policy, but turned back thousands of Jews as the Holocaust raged. The military is kicking out more than one-third of its personnel before they complete a first enlistment. Statistics show that four branches prematurely discharged nearly 36% of enlisted personnel before they had completed their four-year commitments. The most common reasons for the discharges were misbehavior, performance shortfalls, obesity, pregnancy, and physical problems.

[00:06:00]

Experts say the rising rates reflect society’s more casual attitude toward traditional values. All four branches of the service are troubled by the upward attrition rates, but now face the dilemma of trying to lower the rates while implementing values training and maintaining a zero tolerance for drug use and other offenses. The attrition rate adds to the military’s readiness problems, especially when combined with the fact that hundreds of combat pilots and skilled workers are opting to leave the military after their first enlistment.

Looks like President Clinton is getting a little help from his friends. The new legal defense fund has raised in excess of two million dollars in just six months. Thanks to a direct mail piece highlighting the inquiry of the president by independent counsel, Ken Starr. More than 8,000 people have sent contributions to the new trust, although a complete list of donors has not been released. The trust has received checks for $10,000 from…the maximum allowed, by the way, from entertainment mogul, David Geffen, and singer Barbra Streisand, actor Tom Hanks, and director Steven Spielberg, also donated to the cause. An earlier fund was disbanded last December after campaign finance controversies, and strict giving limitation slowed contributions to a trickle. President’s legal expenses are estimated to be six million dollars, but officials say they could eventually exceed 10 million.

When residents of one Oregon community learned that a child molester was moving into their neighborhood, they decided to take steps to prevent it, and that’s good news.

At least three families pooled together their money to buy the home of the child molester’s mother, where the man was going to live when he got out of prison. They plan to close on the house in October, and then turn around and sell it. Officials say it’s the first time that a community has tried to block a molester from moving in by buying him out.

[00:08:00]

One resident said, “If we didn’t do everything possible to protect our children, we’d never forgive ourselves if something happened. If all we lose is money, it’s worth the peace of mind.” That’s our look at today’s news. To make a comment, you can send an email to takeaction@americasvoice.com. You can also send us a fax at 202-544-4132, but we need your name and city if we are to use your letter on the air. You might also want to log onto “America’s Voice” at our Internet website at www.americasvoice.com. You can get programming information, communicate with your members of Congress, watch “America’s Voice” live, and answer the question of the day. That’s www.americasvoice.com. Question currently on the website is, what do you think President Clinton will do on Monday when he is scheduled to testify before the grand jury? Yesterday’s question was, do you think there is a bias against the state of Arkansas? (As the First Lady Does). Five percent responded yes, 92% no, there is no bias. Nobody was undecided on the matter, and one percent had no opinion. Right now we’ll take a little break, but when we come back, we’ll talk to a former lesbian activist who’s now working as a policy analyst for the Family Research Council. There’s more direct line immediately after these messages.

Male 2: From our studios in Washington DC “Direct Line” with Paul Weyrich continues.

Paul: And my guest today is Yvette Cantu, a family policy analyst for the Family Research Council who was a former activist with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the ACLU. Yvette, welcome to direct line.

Yvette: Thank you.

[00:12:00]

Paul: The critical question, it seems to me in the debate, if you put aside the religious questions involved, which I do not, but, I mean, if you’re really looking at the public policy aspect of this is, can so-called gays or homosexuals and lesbians leave the lifestyle that they are engaging in…

Yvette: Right.

Paul:…and return to, if you will, mainstream lifestyles, or is this something that they are locked into forever as the homosexual community contents?

Yvette: Absolutely, they can leave the lifestyle. I consider myself living proof of that as well as the 20,000 people who are involved in the Exodus International Ministries to date. I mean these are the people who are currently being treated along with the 20,000 who have been in the past. They’ve had 20,000 phone calls this year alone.

Paul: Really. So, there are people who say, “I’m really not happy here. I want to get out.”

Yvette: Exactly, exactly. And we feel that they should have that opportunity. Personally, when I was living in the lifestyle, I never knew that there was an alternative. I had never heard of anyone actually coming out of it before. So, I figured I was consigned to living that way. Although I admit, I didn’t want to leave. It wasn’t something I was looking to do, but I hadn’t even seen anything that would give me the opportunity to leave if I wanted to.

Paul: All right. It’s time for a break, and we’ll be right back in a moment with more “Direct Line” and more of Yvette Cantu story [inaudible 00:13:35].

Male: What does America really think about the key issues of the day? Log on to americasvoice.com to find out. Americasvoice.com, turning talk into action.

Male: Direct line continues. Now, here’s Paul Weyrich.

[00:16:00]

Paul: And we’re talking about homosexual issues with the Family Research Council’s Yvette Cantu. Yesterday you had a press conference, and at that press conference, one of the leading lobbyists, if you will, for the homosexual and lesbian causes, the human rights campaign, was handing out leaflets saying, “Mission Impossible.” The suggestion being that you aren’t real, that this is not a possibility that people who are homosexual are that way for life. And there isn’t anything that anybody can do about it because there’s no personal choice involved.

Yvette: That’s what they were saying, and then they didn’t even admit Anthony Falzarano and I both spoke. They didn’t even acknowledge our existence. So, that alone tells you right there they don’t want to admit that we exist because that means that it’s a choice. And if it’s a choice, then that means people weren’t born that way, which is absolutely the truth.

Paul: All right. At what point in your life, and I, you know, don’t like to get personal in this stuff, but I don’t see how we can avoid it if we’re gonna discuss this. But, I mean, at what point in your life were you convinced that you were a lesbian, and at what point did you get active in that movement because you weren’t just an ordinary garden-variety lesbian, if you will. You are somebody who rose to the ranks of an activist and an important lobbyist on the subject.

Yvette: Right. Well, I had always felt that I hadn’t been attracted to my own gender if that’s possible. I mean, your hormones don’t even kick in until your teenage years. And I spent a year in India studying at the University of Delhi Hinduism and Buddhism. And a Hindi teacher made a move back when I was 20 years old. And I did struggle with it for a day, and said, “Oh, it must be my oppressive, controlling Judeo-Christian culture that taught me that there was something wrong with this behavior. So, I’m gonna lash out against society.”

[00:18:00]

It took me about a year once I got back to the United States from India to get involved, and I wasn’t employed by GLAAD. I wasn’t employed by the ACLU. I just supported what they did. I gave money to them. I was part of the letter writing campaigns through GLAAD’s newsletters that they sent out. I went to the gay and lesbian pride parades. I fought with the Christians in front of the gay bars, and I really encouraged my friends who were living in that lifestyle to stand up for who they were, and to really be proud of their sexuality.

Paul: I meant, at what point did something inside of you say, “This really isn’t right?”

Yvette: Well, I started looking at my life. I was living with two gay men at the time, and virtually acting as their nurse maid while they were dying of AIDS. I was looking at my lesbian friends who are involved in drugs and alcohol, possessive relationships that oftentimes led to battery. And I thought, “Is this what life is about? Is this what I can expect for the rest of my life?” And then I was working in a law firm downtown with the guy who was a Christian, and for two years, he was sharing with me the gospel. I turned him into our boss at one point and tried to get him fired. But now looking back on it, obviously, I’ve appreciate what he did because what he did by taking the courage to tell me the truth, led me out of the bondage I was in.

Paul: All right. It’s time for another break now. When we come back, we’ll start taking your calls and comments at 1-877-AMVOICE toll-free in the US and Canada.

Male: You’re watching “Direct Line” on “America’s Voice.” Once again, Paul Weyrich.

Paul: Welcome back. I’m here with today’s guest, Yvette Cantu of the Family Research Council.

[00:22:00]

We’re taking your calls and comments now at “America’s Voice” toll-free number 1-877-AMVOICE. But, of course, you can fax us or email us if you prefer. Before we go to the phones. Let me ask you if you think I’m right in this construction. So many people today say, “Look, leave people alone. Leave them to lead whatever life they choose. It’s none of your business. If you see somebody who is leading a lifestyle you don’t approve of, you don’t have any right to force your morals down that person’s throat.” My view is a little different, which is that we’re supposed to love our fellow man, our fellow human beings. And if I love you, then I want what is best for you. And if I see that your lifestyle is going to lead to death and destruction, then how can I justify leaving you alone? So, you know, I have to say that, in my view, your co-worker there who tried to get you to see that the lifestyle you were involved in wasn’t appropriate, was, in fact, expressing love, not the kind of hostility that they are often pictured as expressing. Am I right on that?

Yvette: Yeah. Absolutely, absolutely. And again, they’re not content with just let me live how I wanna live. There are those homosexuals who do, who just wanna live the way they wanna live and leave me alone. But when you start getting into issues of gay marriage, gay adoption, special rights, then we’re talking about something else. We’re not talking about just let me live the way I want to live.

Paul: When it was known that…in fact, you had exited from this lifestyle, and want to work for the enemy, the Family Research Council. Have you been targeted at all by your ex-friends, shall we say?

[00:24:00]

Yvette: No, not at all. I’ve been out of that lifestyle for six years. And as soon as I became a Christian, and told my friends that I was a Christian, they essentially dropped me. And that was the end of it. They didn’t want to have anything to do with me. They’d accept me regardless of whatever I did before I was a Christian. Once I was a Christian, then I was out.

Paul: But so, they have just ignored you basically. My question I guess was whether you had received any harassment as a result of your change.

Yvette: No. No harassment.

Paul: Well, let me ask you this then. In dealing with this issue, what is the single biggest problem that people have, who advocate traditional values? Is it that, in fact, the advocates of the homosexual, lesbian lifestyle want to, in fact, argue that you are not real? That no one could possibly have done this? And therefore, you must not have been a genuine lesbian.

Yvette: Right.

Paul: Yeah, you must’ve been sort of, you know, flirting with us, but you weren’t really a lesbian because if you were really a lesbian, you couldn’t possibly exit the lifestyle.

Yvette: Exactly. That’s exactly what they’re saying. My argument to that is, then how can you be sure you’re really a lesbian? How can you be sure you’re really homosexual, and that one day you won’t come out too, because as much as you feel that you’re a lesbian, or a gay man, is as much as I felt I was one when I was in the lifestyle.

Paul: Mm-hmm, okay. Well, we’re gonna take another break right now. We’ll be right back. Stay tuned. More after this.

We’re gonna be talking more about this as time goes on. Well, let’s go to the phones now, and Wichita, Kansas, a direct line with our guests. Hello Wichita.

Male: Hello.

Paul: Yes.

George: Hello. My name is George, and I’m in Wichita, Kansas. And I feel it breaks my heart to think that there are so many people that say they love the Lord and they listen to the Bible, and yet where it says that God will turn them over to a reprobate mind if they want to go that way, that He will allow them to. But there’s no way that He says He accepts it. And I was just watching “Ricki Lake” show, was a little funny. I was the one watching yet, and having to turn from two lesbians who are now getting a child, and they were just hammering on their grandmother how wrong, and how unapproved, and how hateful she was.

[00:32:00]

And my faith in my Lord says that I’m supposed to love them enough just like your comments a few minutes ago. That I am to care enough to bring them the truth, and they can make their own choice.

Paul: Right.

George: But when I have to stand there at the Judgment Day, and I consider myself a spiritual Christian that I will be there at the end day in the Book of Life. And I am going to have to watch all these people that I didn’t have enough guts to go up and say, “Look, I love you enough to make you hate me. If it have to, if you wanna view it that way, but you have one chance for eternal life, and you’re making me the bad guy.” It’s incredible.

Paul: Well said, wouldn’t you say?

Yvette: Yeah, absolutely.

Paul: Well, I think we as a society have really become intimidated…

Yvette: Yeah.

Paul:…by the likes of the homosexual lobby and other groups that have made us as the offensive…

Yvette: Right.

Paul:… people. One, in fact, we have been on the defensive now…

Yvette: Exactly.

Paul:…for decades, and decades, and decades. And they’re the ones who are on the offensive, but we’re pictured all the time as being on the offensive. Oh, you have this, you know, outdated views. You are trying to shove those stuff down my throat, and I’m not gonna take it, and, you know.

Yvette: Right.

Paul: And so on. One, in fact, they don’t…most of us go about our business and don’t add aggressive about it at all.

Yvette: Right. I would like to say one thing, if I could, to that last caller. And that is, I was outside a lesbian bar in Long Beach, and there was a man and his wife passing out tracks, and I knew that that’s what they were doing. They were talking to a girl. I could hear that they were Christians. And I walked right up to them. My friend said, “Just leave them alone.” And I said, “What are you doing here? Leave us alone. Don’t you have anything better to do on a Saturday night?” And this guy said,

[00:34:00]

“I’m sorry to offend you, I don’t mean to be offensive. I’m just here to tell you how much Jesus loves you. You can take this track and read it, or you don’t have to.” And that coming to me in love, with that true compassion, did so much for me. It broke me down. It didn’t keep me from going into the bar at that particular time, but it was one step more for me because I realized, look, I’m the mean one. I’m the rude one. This guy was nothing but nice to me. So, I think if we keep that in mind, in dealing with the people who are in that lifestyle are hurting, and they need to know that there is a way out.

Paul: Yeah, I think that’s the key.

Yvette: Right.

Paul: They are hurting people. All right, let’s go to Clatskanie, Oregon, a direct line. Hello, Oregon.

Male: [inaudible 00:34:45].

Paul: Yes.

Male: Can you hear me?

Paul: I can hear you fine.

Male: Oh, okay. I couldn’t hear you. The phone went off for a second. Concerning people born this way, I’d like to comment. In Genesis five, it says, talks about there’s a written account of Adam’s line. And it goes on to say that when God created man, He made him in the image and likeness of God, and then He created a male and female and so on. But then in verse three, which there’s quite a bit of time passed from when God created man, to the fall of Adam and Eve, and in verse three it says, “When Adam had lived 130 years, He created His son in His own image and likeness,” which is His fallen image and likeness. And I would say that each of us are born that way because we’re a sinner. We have a fallen nature, okay? And in the New Testament, it says that Christ, the second Adam, talks about, He came and completed and did what the first Adam couldn’t do. And it is through Him that we come, and we are born again. And the Psalms, it talks about infant when it is being born, and what is his mother’s womb? It says,

[00:36:00]

“His hands are shaping an inequity, meaning that when it comes out, it’s ready to begin sinning.

Paul: Uh-huh.

Yvette: I mean it’s undeniable that we have a sin nature. Some people are gonna get involved in one sin, some in the other. But…

Paul: Yeah. So, on the Eastern Church, we always say that we’re created in the image of God, but the likeness is up to us. It’s time for a break right now. We’ll be back in a moment with more “Direct Line.”

Paul: I’m back with my guest Yvette Cantu of the Family Research Council. Let’s go back to the phones. Daytona Beach, Florida, a direct line.

Female: Good evening, Paul.

Paul: Hi.

Female: Good evening to you, guest. First of all, I would like to give her a compliment for doing what she did. It took a lot of courage, a lot of understanding, a lot of respect for herself, and I also feel that if our God want us to be that way, He would created only all women or only one man. He created man and a woman for very important reason, and therefore, what it happened it should not happen. And another thing is that anytime I see a person that is displaying their feelings on a street in the front of older people, young children, I think that’s horrible. And that if they would stop doing it, we might not have all these problems. And I also like to ask you, guest, don’t you think that what is happening, it’s not coming from why you were born?

[00:40:00]

That it’s happening because that’s the way maybe person wants to try and to live this way? I would appreciate your answer. Thank you.

Yvette: Yeah, I absolutely agree with that. Especially when we’re seeped in immorality. You see all sorts of sex on TV, and in the movies, and, of course, that’s gonna put ideas in children’s head and young people’s heads. And the more open and active people are with with their immorality, and the prouder of it they become, the more susceptible the young people are to experimentation.

Paul: You see yourself one day marrying and have a family?

Yvette: Oh, absolutely.

Paul: Uh-huh.

Yvette: The opportunity hasn’t arisen yet. That’s the only problem.

Paul: Well, maybe among our viewers out there. Glendale, California, a direct line with our guest.

Carina: Hi to you Yvette and Steve. My name is Carina. I’m 21, and I’ve been Christian born again since I was 14, but I’m also gay. And I just think it’s a little bias for to say the gay lifestyle when I myself have never been to a gay bar in my life. I’ve never been associated with any kind of gay affiliation. As a matter of fact, I was the prayer leader in my high school. And, what’s your definition of gay lifestyle? I mean, my lifestyle today was, I went walking, I ate chicken, and I came home. I mean, it was very basic and simple, just like what you would do. And I don’t know why I’m gay, and I’ve been like this for all of my life. I love my parents. Their [inaudible 00:41:33] can be. I’m not saying that I’m a gay and I’m here to stay or something. I’m not even defending. I don’t even care. I mean, I have just, I mean, I’ve got…God does have the power. Jesus does have the power to turn me into a potato, but that doesn’t mean He’s going to. That does not mean so, and I myself have gone many, many times to try to, I don’t know, go to a health center where they can help me.

[00:42:00]

But it turns out that Christian who try to…Christians that help are homosexuals become straight. Out of 100%, even though they don’t say this, 80% of those homosexuals go back to being homosexuals.

Yvette: Well, what you’re saying that 80% of the homosexuals go back to being homosexual. That’s simply not true. That is not an accurate figure. I don’t know where you got that figure. And the fact that God, Jesus wants us to have sexual wholeness is a lot different than turning someone into a potato. And by the gay lifestyle, there are a lot of different pockets [SP] in West Hollywood and Long Beach. I’m sure you know well, being from southern California, the fact that maybe you don’t participate in that, just means that you don’t participate in that. It doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist, and I’m sorry that you see the Christian community the way you’ve experienced it. But for me, it wasn’t like that at all. The people I found in the church were loving and accepting. They weren’t afraid of me, they didn’t shun me. And by having several different friends rather than focusing on one, which I think is one of the common aspects of Lesbianism, I gained wholeness through my relationships and through the power of Jesus, which is what I hope for everyone who is struggling with that sin right now.

Paul: Okay. All that. Now we’re gonna take a break but stay tuned because we’ll have another segment of “Direct Line” in just a moment.

Male: Direct line continues. Now, here’s Paul Weyrich.

[00:46:00]

Paul: Welcome back. We’re taking your calls, your comments, and your questions. Bob Bentley in Chillicothe, Illinois has this question for you. I’m one of the impression that homosexuality is more about self-degradation than sexual satisfaction. Could you comment on this?

Yvette: Well, when you look at some of the sexual acts that are involved, I can see where you could come to that conclusion. And there are people who do feel ashamed for their attractions, and want to be degraded, whether it’s through S&M activities or whatnot. But I’m of the impression that people who struggle with this are really hurting people, who didn’t have their needs met by either the same-sex parent or peers when they were growing up. And once puberty hit, instead of switching over to the opposite sex, they still maintained their relations with their same-sex friends, which eventually became homosexual relationships. And I truly have compassion for them because I was one of them.

Paul: Okay. Let’s go to Corbin, Kentucky. A direct line with Yvette Cantu.

Ken: This is Ken [SP]. Yes, ma’am. It’s refreshing to listen to your program. I just want to say I was a park police officer in a major metropolitan area for a number of years, and I was put what they call on the gay [inaudible 00:47:29]. And the reality of the situation when I first went on, and I would put man in jail mainly for the charge of public lewdness. And when I first started doing it, I was, to be honest with you, I was a little rough with him. Growing up as a child in abusive environment myself, I think the Lord led me that way.

[00:48:00]

But then I put a man in jail one time for discharge, and I asked him, you know, “How many times have you been arrested for this?” And he said three, and he’s been married, and, you know, everything. And, you know, I asked him, you know, “Why do you keep doing this?” And, it’s a habit. It’s a habit. Ever since then, my Christian compassion came out. And when I put these men in jail for this, it would always be the same answer. They would just get themselves into a habit. Do you see it as more of a habit than anything else? I mean, I really don’t know if something…if there’s some workings in the mind that says that they are gay, but I look at it more as a habit.

Yvette: Well, any behavior that’s repeated is going to form a habit. And especially when it’s a sexual behavior, because then you’re getting the pleasure out of it, you know, pleasurable response, which is gonna draw you to it again and again. So, yes. It can be a habit that you can become enbondaged to.

Paul: Well, I wish we could get to the other callers that want to talk with you, but I’m sure that your work at the Family Research Council is gonna draw lots of interest and attention, and no doubt that will provide us with the opportunity to have you visited us again. And I thank you very much for sharing your personal insights with us because it I think casts a very different light on topic that a lot of people are afraid to deal with.

[00:52:00]

Male: And now, Paul Weyrich’s commentary.

Paul: I don’t read most of the ads in the morning paper, but one caught my eye this morning. It was for AT&T. The ad had two large cell phone buttons with a number zero zero on them, and the ad went on to say, introducing AT&T zero zero information for all long, local and long distance service in the US for an AT&T representative who stays with you when you don’t have the exact name, for when you don’t have the exact location, for when you don’t have the area code for addresses and zip codes. I nearly jumped up on the bed and yelled, “Yes, at last, the company that is listening to the customer.” I don’t know…
