A girl or the riches?
Is a girl a distraction when trying to get filthy rich? That is the dilemma in the book “how to get filthy rich in rising Asia.” The book talks about an impoverished boy who migrates from his rural home to a city when he struggles to become wealthy. When the boy moves to the city, his father enrolls him in a school where he gains education which gives his life a foundation. Here he meets a beautiful girl, but he cannot be with her if he wants to be wealthy since love is the luxury of the rich. He then starts working for a master from whom he gains business knowledge. He then leaves to venture into business on his own.
The boy in the book is so intent on being rich that he views love as a luxury. He chooses to let the girl go so that he can pursue his greatest dream, becoming rich. This is a great sacrifice on his part since he is heartbroken. Nevertheless, he forges forward with his plan of working hard to acquire wealth. His choice of working for a master is brilliant, yet it is questionable considering the master repackages expired merchandise and sells it. This is not surprising as the whole city is full of corrupt and crooked business people who are involved in under dealings. Nonetheless, he learns the craft and ventures into business on his own.
This novel is ironic considering the boy the boy gave up the girl to gain riches, and after getting the girl later in life, the riches escapes him where he dies a poor man. Unlike this book, other books on how to acquire wealth tend to advice one to find the right girl when looking to get rich. Two heads are better than one, they argue. This is in stark contrast to this book where wealth comes at the expense of the love of your life, and when love finally comes around, you lose the wealth. Then the question would be what would be your choice? Would you choose love or wealth?
Finally, the book is unusual in that unlike most novels, the book talks of doing anything to gain wealth, which includes underdealing. In the book the master of the poor boy is dealing with the repackaging of expired goods and teachers are envious of electricians, none of these dealings are ethical. The rich have gotten rich through unscrupulous methods. I wonder if this is the kind of business dealings one has to venture into to be rich. This is distinct from other business books that teach business principles based on ethical business practices. It is also misleading to think that rural people cannot be rich unless they move to big cities. I do not believe one has to give up the love of their lives for riches and neither do they have to deal in unethical ways. Riches and love can go hand in hand, but one has to make good deals in choosing a woman for their life partner as much as they have to make those choices when doing businesses.
