Canada’s mental health strategy
Introduction
Canada’s mental health strategy in May 2012 aimed to improve mental health care for the people of Canada living with a mental disorder. It recommends mental health care and services as a duty for the government.
Promoting mental health should cover all issues that affect people, the community, and individuals living with mental health. The promoting strategy should include funding health services, creating awareness, creating access to quality mental health services, and enhancing improved outcomes. However, the process is associated with several pros and cons, as discussed below.
advantages
Through this strategy, there is a significant improvement in how the government and employers promote well-being and recovery of mental health problems by influencing the community to engage in acts that improve social and economic needs to promote well being of people and families living with mental illness. People with mental illness and their families felt that their challenges were being addressed and created hope that their situation and experiences would be better. This is because media, government, and corporates minimize class discrimination, racism, and homophobia associated with mental health care. It also helped prevent suicide among the people living with mental disorder and their families due to reduced stigma.
Disadvantages
Although the benefits of this approach are also disadvantages, such as lack of funding of health services, such as dental services, have created a gap in the population. Although health is a fundamental right for everyone, mental health seems to have been ignored. Research shows that most of the people with a mental health condition pay for the services from their pockets or insurance covers, making it difficult for them to access weekly appointments of the psychiatric as it is too expensive.
Conclusion
Positive change has been noticed among families and people living with a mental problem by implementing this strategy. However, according to the study, the issuing of funding of health services of people with a mental health condition is still unresolved, slowing the improvement process.
