Week 6 Discussion

A survivor from residential school is Lorna Rope. She went to St. Paul Residential school in Lebret at the age of five years. Rope narrates that she spends nine years in a residential school where she undergoes a lot of problems. She would wake up early in the morning, where a lot of chores awaited her. Rope explains that she would sweep and wash the floors all over where she even missed her class lessons. Experience in residential school has a lot of negative things and positive things. She lost her identity, where she become hopeless about herself. Back at home, life was unbearable since her father was so abusive. she came to learn that he acquired this trait from the harsh treatment he undergoes in residential schools.

Rope’s school life is evidence of harsh colonial schools in Canada to Indians. From this narration, I have learned listening to the survivor’s story enables one to understand the meaning of historical events and factors that led to their appearance. The narrations are meaningful since they are recorded evidence of the harsh treatments in whites schools. In my opinion, policies on the indigenous people’s compensation would be fair since there is clear evidence provided by the victims of residential schools.
