Auden wrote his poem’ 1 September 1939′ immediately after Germany’s invasion in Poland, a move that signified the beginning of World War II. This poem is one of those that people reach for when things start crumbling down. He wrote this poem to condemn what has become of the world while giving hope to humanity. The author includes the poem when narrating the events of the 9/11 attack (Dodds 83). The author portrays the attack as a blow not only to the US but also to the whole world. For that reason, the poem perfectly describes what has gone wrong with humanity. The poem also gives hope to the affected people around the world.
National identity is the fundamental basis of international politics. Nations are more than just boundaries and territories (Dodds 86). They comprise of its citizens with their pride of citizenship, offering them a sense of belonging. National identity has put a lot of pressure on countries to guard their reputation, which has played a significant role in geopolitics. For instance, after the 9/11 attack, The United States, led by the Bush administration, invaded Iraq. This was done in total disregard of international laws. Since the US did not want to be seen as a victim of terrorism, it invaded Iraq to preserve its reputation at the expense of international law rules. The need to preserve a nation’s image has been the center of all international relations, such that nations have to look at how the world views them before making any move. Moreover, since proud and patriotic citizens are a country’s right image, nations maintain an excellent image to inspire patriotism in their citizens. To some extent, the international world seems to encourage and even promote national identity by instilling a sense of self-determination within people all over the world through treaties and conventions.
Lethal autonomous weapons are robotic weapons that can identify targets and engage independently of any manual human control. Brose brands china as a rising power that is working on making its power felt worldwide. Being a communist government, China is seeking to spread the authoritarian culture to other nations. The Chinese government, therefore, views advanced technology as a means to realize its goals. Besides, China sees the United States as a barrier that hinders them from achieving their goals (Brose 106). According to Brose, this seems to be America’s problem since China will stop at nothing to become the world’s epitome of power. The question that creates the problem for America is whether or not they are willing to live in a world where China has better military capabilities.
New enabling technologies are emerging technologies, which, if applied, go far beyond weapons. These technologies enable changes that could entirely transform people’s social and economic being. One area of enabling technologies is Artificial Intelligence (Brose 106). This is any task performed by a machine, imitating human intelligence (Brose 107). Currently, China is the global leader in Artificial Intelligence. China has put in many resources to ensure that it has an advantage over the west in terms of Artificial Intelligence. Its biggest companies, Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent, have impacted the world and are part of the highly organized and well-funded Artificial Intelligence plan. The other area of enabling technologies is biotechnology. Biotechnology is a biology that involves the use of living things to develop products. Biotechnology is mainly becoming a priority for many developing countries, and China is not left behind. The Chinese government and the scientific community in China have offered immense support to the development of biotechnology. China is slowly becoming a biotech powerhouse in critical scientific fields like neuroscience.
