- Drawing from the Community Tool Box guidance, Identify and map out your activities for conducting your Community Needs Assessment. Create a Gantt chart to guide your activities. (Search the internet for examples of a Gantt chart.)
The chosen community for this assessment is the Tenderloin neighborhood, placed in downtown San Francisco. This neighborhood is essentially a home for numerous unsheltered homeless individuals. With the inception of the COVID-19 pandemic, most Francisco shelters have been closed, worsening the homeless population’s situation. Therefore, the purpose of this assessment is to evaluate the health needs of the homeless population within the Tenderloin neighborhood amidst the severe effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Several activities must be coordinated and undertaken to ensure that the assessment becomes successful. These activities, which shall be conducted sequentially, include defining the community’s population, location, and values; deciding the kinds of health needs that will be assessed; identifying available resources including organizations, people, and policies; seeking permission from local authorities and making connections, collecting relevant data, analyzing findings, and generating a report. The activities alongside their timelines are given in a Gantt chart attached to this document.
- Describe your plan for conducting your community assessment. Essentially, how are you going to draw from online data sources and key informant interviews to address your identified community needs assessment question?
In this assessment, data will be collected from two sources – directly from participants through interviews and online sources through a review of relevant resources. Data collected from interviews will include nutrition elements of the community, shelters, culture, and available medical services. From online services, data on problems faced by homeless communities shall be collected. Equally, recommendations on how to achieve the health needs of homeless populations shall be gathered. Ideally, the collected data shall be analyzed to reveal the most urgent health needs that homeless individuals require. Using the findings, recommendations shall be made and appropriate intervention within the chosen community to achieve the identified needs.
