The intertwined popular cultural and religious connection
Even though popular culture and religion may be considered to be a focus on two different subjects, the evidence clearly shows the interconnection that exists between the two entities, making them co-existent within society. This is in the sense that, several elements of the popular culture are depicted in religion and vice versa, and at the same time there exists a dialogue between these two entities.
The existence of religion within popular culture
Most importantly, the application of technologies such as media stands out to be one of the main characteristics of mass media. Notably, there has been a great representation of religious figures within popular media such as television films, where religious characters are represented. As indicated in Religion and popular culture in America by Forbes, it is indicated how movies such as “The Ten Commandments”, has made a representation of the godly beings in its program.
Existence of the popular culture in line with religion
Even though religion has sufficiently shown its independence in terms of the norms and adherence to the specified ways, popular culture has found its way into religion. As it is widely known, the new music trends such as pop are known to be a distinct characteristic of the popular culture. However, religions for instance the Christians have embraced the popular culture music styles in their songs and sermon. As argued by Postman, the new television trends and application of popular culture musical ways turns the whole thing into entertainment rather than conveying the primary religious messages.
The dialogue existing between religion and popular culture
Considering the intertwined connection that already exists between religion and popular culture, it has drawn with it a dialogue, especially from the religious side. In the current society, the popular culture has been in much support of aspects such as abortion and LGBT, which is against the norms of the religious sect. For instance, there is the case of the Green day’s which an actor said, “East Jesus Nowhere”, which resulted in a sharp resentment by the Christian clergy.
In conclusion, there exists a strong connection between religion and popular culture. This is clearly shown by the entanglement between the two entities, and additionally the conflict of views that arise due to their engagement.
