Advantages and Disadvantages of Conservatism

Conservatism is defined as the support for traditional values, which comes along opposition to rapid change. Therefore, conservatism focuses on supporting religion matters. Thus, most countries that have a theocratic system of government practice conservatism. Hence, understanding the topic entails explaining the advantages and disadvantages of conservatism.

Promoting and preserving cultural heritage is one of the advantages of conservatism. Preserving culture uses proper methodologies to ensure the culture is maintained over the future years (Habermas, 2018). Therefore, keeping culture helps promote a sense of togetherness in society and ensure that there is a family’s proper structure. Thus, leading to the reinforcement of values, faith, freedom, and integrity of society’s members.

Conservatism aims at promoting proper organization in the State institutions like parliament, schools, and other religious institutions like churches and Mosques. Promoting adequate organization is key to ensuring effective implementation of proposed projects. Hence, conservatism reduces illegal activities like corruption in the institutions—furthermore, conservatism advocates for property ownership by individuals (Habermas, 2018). Therefore, under a conservative system, citizens have the right to own their property.

Inoperativeness is the first disadvantage of conservatism. Instead of planning for the future, conservatism focuses more on the past invents. Hence, under conservatism, it isn’t easy to come up with new scientific inventions. Furthermore, most scholars argue that conservatism lacks principles. Therefore, conservatives are unable to identify between rights and wrongs. Besides, conservatism can be regarded as a dangerous system because it may embrace poor cultural practices in society. Some cultural practices are non-developmental and only end up eroding morals. In conclusion, conservatism has both disadvantages and advantages when applied.
