Baylor Demotes Kenneth Starr
Sexual assault is a grievous crime since it not only affects the victim physically but also degrades the mental stability of the victims. As many governments and institutions institute measures to eliminate the vice, Baylor should have placed tougher measures against Starr than just demoting him. Due to his past profession, which included his contribution towards a former president’s impeachment due to sexual assault allegations, society expected more responsibility from his side. Therefore, Baylor should have cut all professional and academic ties that it has with Starr. Besides, Baylor also deserves to undergo the disciplinary process of the institution for incompetence and gross negligence.
The board is responsible to the shareholders of the university. Notably, the board has to ensure the university’s smooth operations and the maximization of the wealth of the shareholders. The board was reluctant to cut all ties with Starr due to his ability to raise funds for the university through the football team. Since the board is also responsible for the students and the society at large, the board members may have felt that cutting all the ties with Starr would have put the university in financial jeopardy.
Nevertheless, the decision to allow Starr to teach is an ethical compromise. The report alleges that Starr and his team neglected and, in other cases, retaliated against the students who filed complaints against the football players. Indeed, Starr prioritized his ability to raise funds for the university over the well-being of the students. Notably, Starr lacks the morality and skills that an educator requires to teach any group of people. His actions have impacted the victims and some of his football players who are currently serving prison sentences.
