Code of Hammurabi and Plebiscites
The code of Hammurapi is one of the earliest legal codes, which was announced by the Babylonian king Hammurabi. This king reigned between 1792 to 1750 B.C. The Hammurabi king united the southern Mesopotamia by expanding the city of Babylon towards the river Euphrates. Therefore, the king’s Hammurabi code was meant to set standards for moneymaking interactions and established fines and punishments to reach the necessities of justice. Hammurabi’s code was imprinted on a massive black stone stele that was finger-shaped, which was robbed by attackers and finally revived in 1901.
The plebiscites are where the citizens of a country vote to decide on some issues such as the takeover of power, choice about independence, or the ruler of a government. In this system, voters are asked to confirm or reject the rightfulness of a certain form of government. The plebiscites were popular in France after the revolution of 1789. This is because it was deemed as a countenance of popular sovereignty and in 1804, they made Napoleon a ruler.
The code of Hammurapi is different from plebiscites, since, in the first case, the king decides on what is right for the people while in the plebiscites the citizens vote to decide on what is good for them. Therefore, from the two concepts, it is evident that in the ancient world, that is before civilizations, the type of ruling involved leaders exercising full control of power by deciding for their people. On the other hand, plebiscites are a form of revolution and occurred after in the 1800s. This kind of system is democratic and involves the citizens deciding for themselves on what is right. Therefore, democracy leadership is the most appropriate word that connects the two concepts. The Hammurapi code of law is a monarchy system while the plebiscites involve the democratic form of governorship.
