PICOT question
In response to Jacquelyn Henry’s post, I believe her picot question was excellently structured. The population identified as young adults showing mild symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, and her intervention was using either phenobarbital alone or with traditional modalities. Her comparison was the treatment using these drug combinations against conventional benzodiazepines. Symptom management within the period of admission were the outcomes and time. Apart from a well-structured PICOT question, she has chosen very relevant databases for her research. Her databases are specifically inclined towards allied health, nursing, healthcare, and biomedicine. The databases are, therefore, very relevant to her research regarding the treatment for mild and moderate alcohol withdrawal symptoms. While her databases are very relevant to her research, I believe she could have used more keywords to help her optimized her searches to the fullest. Some of the keywords she could have included are AOD withdrawal syndrome, clinical management, alcoholism, and alcohol use disorder. More keywords would also include alcohol dependence, drug therapy, and alcohol withdrawal management. These keywords could be used independently or in combinations to help get the most research materials regarding the research topic. When there are more materials available, it is easier to choose the most relevant and the most informative sources to use.
In response to Angel Yang, I believe that his PICOT question could have defined his population better. The population he defines is patients who are admitted, which seems vague. More specifications could have been uses, such as gender, age, and specifically which unit the research would focus on. The population for his research could, therefore, have been patients admitted to the intensive care unit. The intervention for the question is wiping the surfaces after a patient is discharged, and the comparison was cleaning using UV lights. The outcome for the question was the hospital-acquired infections, and the timeline was in six months. Having established the PICOT question fully, I believe Angel could have used more databases for her research. Angel uses only two research databases which are CINAHL and Medline. Both databases are very relevant to his research topic, as they are specifically focused on scholarly materials related to nursing, medicine, and healthcare. However, using more databases would give a broader approach to the topic and offer access to more research materials. Angel could have used more keywords in her search as well. Some of the keywords to use are germicidal, disinfection, micro-organism, and hospital environmental cleaning. The keywords can be combined or used independently to optimize the search for sources.
