I agree with the presentations that workplace addiction is on the increase, and many individuals are struggling with the same. Drug addiction in the workplace leads to absenteeism, reduced productivity, as well as healthcare cost. Further, workplace accidents increased following employee drug influence. There are numerous contributing factors to employee substance abuse in the workplace. Firstly, a workplace culture that promotes alcoholism and other drug abuse activities that encourage individuals to abuse substances. In a culture where an organization employs individuals from the same gender, such as a male-dominated workplace, chances are these individuals will engage in drinking habits. Research has shown that male-dominated occupations have a culture of drinking as a way of showing solidarity and gaining a sense of belonging. Workplace alienation is another aspect that contributes to drug abuse in the workplace. When an organization does not encourage a culture of sharing and teamwork, many individuals end up feeling isolated and opt to turn to drugs as a way of consolation. Low job autonomy also contributes significantly to drug abuse within the workplace.
Consequently, an organization has a responsibility to ensure the working environment does not promote drug abuse habits. Organizations could start by establishing programs that seek to address drug abuse issues, which creates a win-win situation for both the employees and the organization. Also, organizations could adopt substance abuse policies that will help increase productivity and to help keep the environment safe. Drug testing is also essential amongst job candidates as this would help avoid a situation where an organization only employs drug addicts. Employee assistance programs ought to come into play to help resolve problems as they emerge. Counseling programs help employees in an organization to deal with their drug abuse problems.
Further, the supervisors ought to get familiar with drug-related procedures. The supervisors ought to know drug code that requires enforcement. The supervisors ought to be aware of the signs and symptoms of drug abuse.
In conclusion, drug abuse is a significant issue within the organization and one that requires immediate attention. The success of any organization relies heavily on employee productivity. Thus, when the same is not in place, there is a chance the organization will not be in a position to reach its set goals and objectivity. It becomes paramount, therefore, for an organization to look for ways on how they can manage drug-related habits within the organization. In the past various organizations have recorded significant losses following low employee productivity due to drug use. Thus, initiating programs and practices that promote a drug culture-free environment is essential as it is a substantial determinant of organizational success.
