In the peer document by Helen Hunt Jackson on a Century of Dishonor (1881), the author discusses the escapades that the native Americans underwent in the hands of the united states. In this case, I agree with Helen that some of the injustices that the natives suffered in the hands of the United States include; poverty and land grabbing. Notably, this is revealed by the Meriam Report, published in 1928, which showed how the US government used treaties or force to acquire lands from the natives, and how the Indians were living in extreme poverty accompanied by inadequate housing and poor diets (Stefon, 1975). In this document, I have personally learned very many things about the relationship that existed between the federal government and the Native Americans during this time, which is quite in line with what we are currently learning in class. This document has significantly enlightened me to some extent as far as American history is concerned. However, I think it could have been better if Helen could have expounded more on how the native, later on, overcame these injustices. Generally, it is a wonderful post full of information regarding American history.
