I’m A Cop. If You Don’t Want to Get Hurt, Don’t Challenge Me
Sunil Dutta, in this documentary, “I’m a cop. If you don’t want to get hurt, don’t challenge me,” uses a sincere and elaborate, although at times harsh and strict tone to respond to the criticism that has always been heaped on the police and their policing methods. Dutta maintains that citizens who encounter with police can easily prevent brutality by cooperating even under circumstances when they feel their rights are being violated.
In this piece, the author, at times sound harsh and strict in presenting his facts, although, his argument is very sensitive and helps both the public and cops’ safety. For instance, he says, “if you don’t want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground, just do what I tell you, (Dutta, 2014).” However, it right that avoiding confrontation and resistance with police is the best way to ensure the safety of the citizen and the police officer in the picture. Sunil recognizes that there are corrupt and bully cops, but Most police brutalities, he says, are as a result of refusing to cooperate and using cursing sentiments on police officers.
In an honest opinion and from the personal evidence illustrated by Sunil Dutta, it is right to follow the legal procedures when an individual feels violated by the police. This is better than protesting and going physical with the police, just as Sunil maintains; “Do what the officer tells you to, and it will end safely for both of you (Dutta, 2014).” Although most people argue that the justice system has not held cops accountable for most of their illegal and brutal use of force against innocent citizens, the bottom line is that one emerges safe and alive after an encounter with a police officer.
In summary, the public must recognize policing and important and accord it the professionalism it deserves so that the police also have an easy time in serving the public and protecting their safety. Police brutality can be reduced by the cooperation of the public and using the legal justice system to handle the corrupt and bad cops.
