Nikola Tesla Biography

Nikola Tesla was a renowned inventor and scientist. Nikola was born on 10th July 1856 in Croatia; he died in 1943 in the United States. Nikola, in later years, moved to the United States, where he acquired citizenship. Nikola is a remarkable and outstanding figure in the field of science. Besides, numerous quotes believed to have been said by him are recorded in books. His expertise was linked to his childhood in Croatia, where he had a great interest in science and poetry. The essay aims to discuss the early life and adult life of Nikola Tesla and his contributions to science and poetry.

How was Nikola Tesla’s early life? Tesla was born in a typical family in Smiljan, which was a part of the Austrian empire. His father was a priest from the Orthodox church while his mother managed the family’s farm. Tesla was not an only child as he had five siblings. In many books, it is indicated that Tesla’s mother was brilliant, although uneducated. Tesla’s mother is linked to the successes of Tesla later in his life. His mother, Djuka Mandic, influenced Tesla’s interest in electrical engineering. She invented small household items while Tesla was growing up. Nikola had a lifelong mental illness in which the early signs first occurred when his brother died. Tesla was seven years old when his older brother Daniel died of injuries after a riding accident. Tesla was hugely affected by his brother’s death that he started seeing visions and experiencing hallucinations.

How was Tesla’s education? Nikola Tesla was a very educated individual. He joined the Technical University of Graz and the University of Prague after completing his junior school education. Nikola Tesla began his higher education in Germany in RealSchule, Karlstadt. He joined the Technical University of Austria at the age of nineteen. As an electrical engineering student, he quickly established himself as a smart student who gained respect from other students and professors. His first move in the invention was triggered by his numerous arguments and debates with his professor on what he claimed were inaccuracies and flaws in the design of D.C. current. While at the University of Austria, Nikola Tesla became obsessed with designing an alternating current motor, which was to work by utilizing electromagnetic fields hypothetically. The obsession with the hypothetical A.C. motor affected his academics in which he was reprimanded for uncomplete school work and unauthorized sleeping habits. Tesla was unable to finish his schooling as he later became a gambling addict and eventually lost all his tuition fees. After quitting college, Tesla suffered one of his first nervous breakdowns, which then occurred multiple times. Tesla later joined the University of Prague in the 1970s.

What are the inventions that made Nikola Tesla famous? Nikola Tesla is linked to several designs in the field of electrical and mechanical engineering. He invented the induction motor and developed ideas for other inventions such as the electrical dynamos and the brushless electrical fan. Tesla also made significant contributions to A.C. electricity and the electrical coil.

What was the journey towards the inventions by Nikola Tesla? In pursuit of inventing the induction motor, he moved into the United States at the age of twenty-eight. In 1884, he left his home and moved into the United States. He was referred to a famous inventor and businessman, Thomas Edison. Edison was a renowned inventor who based his inventions on D.C. current. Tesla was hired by Edison and became an assistant in improving Edison’s inventions. The two later parted ways after work-related differences attributed to their different personalities. The first solo- a venture by Tesla occurred when he was funded to improve arc lighting. He was successful in his project, but unfortunately, he became broke and had to take odd jobs to survive. Two years later, Tesla was funded to establish Tesla electric company. However, he failed in progressing his company since he was inferior in commerce and entrepreneurship.

Nevertheless, when working in his company, he invented and developed the A.C. He got the idea of using A.C. current in appliances while he was at the Technical University of Austria. While in the University, he carefully observed the operation of a Gramme dynamo, which worked as a generator when its mechanism was reversed. He developed the principle of rotating the magnetic field, which he used to make an induction motor. He made his first induction motor in 1884 long before he moved to the United States. He made the induction motor while on employment on the Continental Edison Company in Strasburg, Paris.

Nikola Tesla on his died a poor man in 1943. However, the world of science will live to remember him for his outstanding contributions. The A.C. current in which he invented is majorly used in most parts of the world. A.C. current is currently used in appliances ranging from household appliances to industrial. The induction motor invented by Tesla is also used in many electronics such as the brushless electric motor and motors used in power tools such as drills and grinders. The Tesla coil is also used in radios.
