Individual Reflective Critique – Philosophy/Ethics
Reasons for Acting Ethically Options Menu: Forum
Acting ethically requires individuals to make better decisions that will benefit everyone involved and society as well. Proper ethical decisions are dependent on good behavior instilled from a young age. Additionally, ethical decisions influence the outcome of different situations especially involving multiple dimensions. In light of this information, one instance that I was faced with a decision on proper behavior was a confrontation between my mother and father. It was one evening when my father came home claiming that his money was missing and that one of us took it. He was screaming and shouting claiming he will beat up all his children until the ‘thief’ reveals themselves. As soon as he started beating us, my mother emerged shouting no one will be beaten. She admitted to taking the money to take my siblings to the hospital and forgot to inform him. My father continued shouting and threatened to beat everyone. I intervened and calmed him down since taking his child to the hospital was important.
This decision to intervene is from a consequentialist point of view since this benefited everyone involved in the confrontation. This means that my father would have regretted beating up his family and we would have hated him for not understanding our actions. I do not have these perspectives in mind when faced with difficult ethical situations because each situation is different. There are instances where I will act because it is the correct thing to do while in other instances, I will act because consequences affect everyone. For instance, in my situation, the right thing to do would have been to blame my mother for not informing my father. In that situation, I cannot support my point of view because I cannot between my parents as I love them both.
Post-Ethical Society Options Menu: Forum
The barrier that politicians face to act ethically is because of financial incentives. This means that the reason why politicians do not tell the truth is due to the financial remunerations they will receive once they get in office. Unfortunately, these reasons for acting this way are accepted by the general population because, during campaigns, the politicians issue cash out to the people. As such, the double standards of condemning and praising politicians prove that we are living in a post-ethical society. In my view, there are several ways to improve this and include politicians halting cash-outs to the general population and the government providing employment opportunities to the youth. The politicians mostly exploit youth because they do not have jobs. If the government can provide employment opportunities to such youths, they will not be manipulated by the politicians. More importantly, this will help stop the cash handouts that politicians issue to the general population.
Ethics of Cheap Clothing Options Menu: Forum
The clothing retailers that sell clothes made in Asia are held accountable for business ethics because they accept products made by people working in deplorable conditions. The clothing retailers should mobilize together and demand better working conditions for these workers. Businesses should be ethical to attract and keep their top talented employees. In Asia, many of the workers leave such companies once they get better jobs. The poor working conditions indicate that clothing retailers and cloth companies promote a poor corporate culture. The reason why you and I are held accountable for our ethics around cheap clothing is that they are mainly made by underage children in Asia. On top of this, most of us love cheap clothes and this symbolizes that we support child labor. This is the major reason why we are held accountable for our ethics around cheap clothing.
