The impact of standardized Nursing Terminology

Meaning of standardized nursing terminology to the nursing practice

Standardized nursing terminology can be described as the use of common language used to describe services nurses offer to patients and care. In the past years, nurses have used a range of terminologies to describe the same service. It is used so that the profession can have a standard way and method of communication. When the corresponding languages are used to describe outcomes, assessments, and interventions, nurses from different parts of the world rank hospitals and even nations to understand the meaning of these terminologies (Rutherford n.p, 2008).  I would use interactive methods to communicate to the nurse who did not know why the use of standardized language is essential. I would also demonstrate what I say, using examples that nurses can relate to.

Reasons why nurses document their care using Standardized Nursing Languages

The care that nurses provide to patients has the purpose of sustaining life, promote recovery, reduce suffering, and help the patient come back to normalcy. These activities are not personal but of great interest to health care settings and clinical disciplines. Therefore it is crucial to document the activities using standardized languages in the electronic health record. Common terminologies ensure standardization so that the patients have their data stored in an unambiguous manner (Lunderberg 2, 2008).

The role of a nurse leader as a knowledge worker

When nurses use standardized languages to record their activities, they help increase the knowledge available in the health care systems. The future nurses can use the information in the records for research, administration, and education (Rutherford n.p, 2008).  Electronic data is crucial because it indicates the time when the nursing activities took place.

Importance of nursing terminologies

It promotes communications between the health care workers globally and nationally. The common language helps nurses know new intervention methods that are not in use in their areas.

Benefits and challenges of implementing standardized nursing terminology in the nursing practice and Examples

Communication between healthcare providers, administrators, and nurses is improved. Diseases such as mental problems have common terminologies to describe it. For example, paranoid schizophrenia means that there is a failure to progress. All stakeholders in the health profession from third players, nurses, physicians, and health care practitioners can easily understand that term (Walden university n.p, 2019).  The coding systems in health practice, such as ICD-10 and DSM-IV, use numbers for billing purposes, and psychiatric diagnoses. Before a task force named NANDA that developed a common language, nurses used different words. Since then, different styles have been developed for use in a variety of circumstances and settings. When nurses in the whole world communicate in the same language, it is easier to understand and improve their services. Nurses are informed about essential interventions that may not be present in their areas.

The visibility of nursing activities is improved. The nurse can conveniently describe how they treated the patient. Nurses have been forgotten for a long time since the profession is over-reliant on word of mouth. However, in recent times it is essential to document the nursing activities to reduce litigation. When computerized systems near the patient’s bed are used for record, the exercises become more patient-centered, and the documentation made consistent (Walden University n.p, 2019). The nurse’s observation skills and experience to provide the correct judgment are essential values that nurses are required to have. The built-in standardized language helps nurses to make appropriate judgments.

The care given to patients is improved through standardized nursing languages. For instance, a sample of patients with the same signs, such as abdominal pains, may be evaluated and documented for future use. The patients may have nausea, vomiting, and headaches. The exact symptoms are recorded using the same language, and a description of the tests carried out.  The factors that cause abdominal pains, such as junk food and skipping meals, are also recorded. It becomes easier for nurses to identify what the patient is suffering from and the solutions towards the problem.
